A Homeowner’s Checklist For Choosing A Modern Toilet

A Homeowner’s Checklist For Choosing A Modern Toilet

bathroom remodeling in Bucks County by McHale's Kitchen and Bath

When purchasing a toilet for your home or business, there are a great many variables to consider along with cost and color. Height, shape, size, style, water efficiency, and flushing power are all factors that can mean the difference between you being comfortably seated on the porcelain throne or working a plunger. Here is a checklist of things that may make a significant difference when you schedule your bathroom remodeling in Bucks County from McHale’s.

Bathroom Remodeling in Bucks County Done by McHale’s

Utility Bills

For homeowners that are connected to city and town utilities, you know that water bill can make you do a double take. Bathrooms use nearly half of the average home’s water and toilets alone account for about 25 to 30 percent of your water. Older seven-gallon tanks can run you nearly 13,000 gallons per year on average. But if you were to reduce down to a newer 1.28-gallon tank, the annual average consumption could drop to about 2,300 gallons. Basically, your water bill would drop by about 10,000 gallons. One would be correct to say, large tanks are flushing your money down the drain.

Seat Height

The standard height of a toilet is about 14.5 inches, measuring from the floor to rim. Some models are designed to accommodate slightly taller people with a height of about 16 inches. Handicap-rated units and height-friendly models can range from 17 to 19 inches. Obviously, there is a good amount of distance and difference between these models when you bend your knees. The days of selecting the standard unit are a thing of the past. It’s important to pick a height that is comfortable for you and your family. You may want to pick up a step stool for the little ones as well.

Bowl Shape

Toilet bowls come in two basic shapes, round and oval shaped. Oval shaped models are generally a couple of inches long from front to back than their round counterparts and people find them more comfortable, in general. You will need to account for those extra inches in your bathroom layout.

Space

Building codes generally require 15 inches from center to the wall and at least two feet in front. These distances are fine if you have limited space in your bathroom. However, having a good 30 inches in front will make you feel less cramped. And plan for enough elbow room for your sized body. You are not limited to building code measurements. They are the minimums.

Performance and Efficiency

There are two basic types of toilet flushing systems, gravity, and pressure:

  • Gravity Fed: Like many standard home toilets, a tank holds the water. You push the lever and it moves everything down the drain. They can generate as little as 10 PSI and work effectively. They are generally less expensive than pressure toilets but may not push waste as effectively. Basically, they can clog more often.
  • Pressure Units: These models use compressed water and air to force waste down the drain. They tend to make a bit more noise than gravity-fed toilets and your home will need a minimum of about 25 PSI of water pressure for it to function well. These models use less water and the tanks tend to be smaller. The downside for pressurized toilets is that they are usually more expensive.

Features

Like most modern conveniences, toilets have evolved and your purchase now comes with several options that can personalize your experience. Here are some features to consider with a McHale’s bathroom remodeling in Bucks County:

  • Dual Flush: One water conservation option is the two-button flush control. Basically, you can press partial flush for liquids or a full flush for solids. It saves a considerable amount of water over time – a great goal for bathroom remodeling in Bucks County!
  • Concealed and Skirted Trapways: The backs and sides of toilets can look soiled very quickly. Concealed or skirted trapways give the toilet a sleek look and exterior that is easy to clean and doesn’t “trap” as much grime. These make your toilet easy to clean and looking clean longer.
  • One Piece or Two: The vast majority of toilets in use are the two-piece type. The tank rests on the bowl portion and is tightened in place. These are usually easy to find replacement parts for at local hardware stores. But one-piece units, although more expensive, are quite sleek and much easier to keep clean. Wall mounted units are also excellent space savers and good for people using wheelchairs. They do require strong support walls.
  • Touchless Units: Automatic flushing sensors are wonderful for those who don’t like touching toilets or who have forgetful friends and family members. There are also retro-fitting kits available for some models that you can just wave your hand over. They have a fun sci-fi feel about them.
  • Color: About 85 percent of homeowners choose white. But, you can purchase yours in a wide array of colors. Just be careful with “trendy” colors. When the color goes out of style, your bathroom might go with it.
  • Rebates and Warranties: Remember to check for manufacturer rebates and consider what warranty options are available. You never know if your unit has a defect.

Selecting a toilet that is just right for you and your family means weighing the many options, variables, and features of today’s makes and models. It’s also important to discuss your learning with an experienced plumber. When you need Bathroom Remodeling in Bucks County, call the experts at McHale’s!

Leaky faucet repair by McHales

Unless you’re a licensed plumber, it’s best to let a professional repair any leaks in your home. Deciding when it’s time to call in a plumber, however, means knowing when there’s a leak in your house. Since some leaks are trickier to find than others, it’s important to understand the various warning signs of a house leak. The sooner you find a leak and repair it, the better, as an untreated leak can end up costing thousands from damages. To catch a leak as early as possible, here are a few warning signs to watch out for.

When it’s Time to Call the Plumber

  • Mold or mildew. One of the most telling signs of a leak is discovering mold or mildew in your home. When enough moisture accumulates, mold and mildew can grow, creating a health hazard for you and your household. If you find patches of mold or mildew on the walls, ceiling, or somewhere out of the ordinary, there’s a leak somewhere in your house.
  • Damaged paint or wallpaper. Leaks can happen in a variety of places, including inside your walls. That’s why if you see warped or peeling paint, or cracked or discolored wallpaper, the culprit is most likely a leak.
  • Stained walls and ceilings. If your roof is leaking, it can usually result in dark stains on the walls and ceiling. Sometimes the color of the stain can also help to determine what caused the leak. Dark brown or copper stains, for example, are usually caused by a leaking pipe.
  • Musty odors. If there’s mold somewhere in your house, you’re more likely to smell if before you see it. Mold has a distinct odor, and usually, when something smells musty, it either indicates a leak or old age. Be mindful of any foul odors. If you suspect you smell something musty, call a plumber.
  • Warped walls and doors. Any type of leak or water damage is very harmful to wood, and wooden walls and doors are no exception. While the damage might be subtle, it’s a good idea to check your walls for any curved planks of wood, uneven surfaces, or slight discoloration. A house leak can also cause the doors in your house to warp, making them difficult to open or close.
  • If your walls appear to be sweating, it’s because there’s a leak somewhere inside your wall. A “sweating” wall or condensation is usually the result of excessive moisture accumulating behind a wall.
  • Damaged flooring. It’s important to not only watch your walls and ceilings but your floors as well, as hidden leaks can happen beneath tile and wood planks. Be on the lookout for warped wood, stains, soft areas, loose or cracking tiles, peeling caulk, and damp carpet. All are typically signs of a leak.
  • Damaged roof shingles. If your roof is the source of the leak, the easiest way to detect it is through the shingles. The shingles are your roof’s first line of defense, and damaged shingles usually indicate a leak. If you suspect your ceiling has a leak, it’s time to check your roof for bald, buckling, curling, or missing shingles.
  • Cracked garage floor. House leaks can also happen underground. If you notice there are cracks in your garage floor, it could be due to an underground waterline leak. Broken pipes beneath your house can lead to soil erosion, causing parts of the house to settle at a lower level.
  • Warm and damp floors. A damp floor can indicate a plumbing or foundation leak, but if your floors are both damp and warm, the problem may have to do with your water heater. Hot water leaks are another potential problem, and if your water heater isn’t the culprit, you may have a sewer line leak. Hot water leaks are especially problematic, as mold grows faster with hot water.

How to Decide Whether to Repair or Replace Your Damaged Faucet

McHales Kitchen and Bath Faucet Repair

Plumbing services take up your time and can cost a great deal of money, which is why it’s important to first determine whether your faucets are damaged or not. If your faucets are damaged, you should call a licensed plumber as soon as possible. If you’re struggling with your faucets, the problem might not have anything to do with your faucet, as your home’s plumbing is complicated. If you think your faucet is damaged, however, here are a few warning signs to watch out for.

How to Know if Your Faucet is Damaged

  • Dripping faucet. A leaky faucet can be a common plumbing problem, but if you notice your faucet is constantly dripping, then you have a damaged faucet. Constant dripping is usually caused by high water pressure or a broken valve.
  • Spitting faucet. Faucets that function normally, should release a consistent stream of water, but if your faucet has an irregular water flow, there could be some damages. A spitting faucet is usually caused by some sort of internal damage done to the faucet.
  • Squeaking faucet. If your faucet’s handle squeaks when you turn the water on, there could be damages that need urgent repair. Sometimes a squeaky faucet needs a little grease applied, if that doesn’t work, however, then it’s time to call a plumber.

When It’s Time to Repair Your Faucet

  • The type of faucet. There are several different types of faucets, and some faucets have more parts than others. Faucets, such as ball faucets, have several different parts that can be susceptible to damage.
  • Frequent dripping A leaking faucet can usually be fixed with a repair than an entire replacement. Most leaky faucets are fixed by simply removing the handle and tightening the adjusting ring. A leaky faucet can also be resolved by replacing the O-rings on the cartridge when they’ve worn out. If any internal parts are too worn out, however, then it’s time for a replacement.
  • Squeaky faucet. Usually, a squeaky faucet doesn’t warrant a replacement, but a simple repair. Removing the appropriate parts to grease them usually solves the problem.

When It’s Time to Replace Your Faucet

Faucets aren’t built to last forever, and your faucets will break down from use over time. The older the faucet, the less likely it can run efficiently which can result in expensive water bills. If your home runs on hard water, that can cut down on your plumbing’s lifespan drastically. Replacing your entire faucet, however, can be costly, which is why it’s important to determine when your faucet needs a replacement. Here are a few warning signs to watch out for.

  • Age. A good rule of thumb for replacing any appliance is by its age. Faucets are generally built to last for 15-20 years. If your faucet is nearing the end of its lifespan, it might be time to consider a replacement.
  • Frequent issues. One of the most common signs that it’s time to replace your faucet is when it needs constant repairs to function. A few repairs here and there are usually always cheaper than a full replacement, but if the repairs start to add up, you might as well save your money and replace it.
  • Efficiency Older faucets can waste a lot of water, running anywhere from 3-5 gallons per minute. If you’re trying to cut down on utility costs, modern faucets run much more efficiently.
  • Damages. There may be nothing wrong with your faucet, but if your sink or counter surface is damaged, your faucet may need to be replaced as well. Some materials, such as ceramic, ages poorly, and can result in cracks and scratches.

An Enlightened Eatery: Reasons to Renovate Your Kitchen

An Enlightened Eatery: Reasons to Renovate Your Kitchen

  • kitchen remodeling
kitchen

When you are a homemaker in charge of meals, the burning question comes all too often; what’s for dinner? Are you tired of your kitchen with its out of date appliances and look? Perhaps it is time for a renovation.

Kitchen remodeling addresses many physical construction requirements but also lifts your mood every time you walk into it. The major reason for most homeowners fretting over cooking is their inconvenient, outdated or cluttered space. However, there are other reasons to consider beyond simply the hardware.

If you are a homeowner who has to deal with the cooking part on most days, say good-bye to your dingy and drab dining space. Before you bid adieu to your current culinary space, consider the following points.

Renovate the look

While this may not be the primary reason for a kitchen renovation, this is a reason that many consider changing their kitchen. Who wouldn’t want a beautiful or themed space like country-chic, Mediterranean or contemporary? There are a plethora of styles available and depending on your budget, you can find a style that is affordable based on your budget.

Functionality

A renovation makes your kitchen functional than before. Roll out drawers, faucets, convenient sink, proper ventilation and lighting, open shelves and customized cabinets make your work easier and faster. You get access to kitchen items conveniently without any delays.

In addition, you might have appliances that are obsolete. You might have a microwave that has not been replaced in over fifteen years or a constantly malfunctioning

Conserves energy

Old appliances and lights consume more power due to their conventional make. Energy efficient lights and electrical appliances are an ideal upgrade that is not only economically friendly in the long run but also Eco-friendly. For more information on certain equipment, check out the links below.

Utilizes space

There is no one single design for a kitchen. Depending on your home’s interior and floor plan, you might have a finite amount of room. Thankfully, there are ways to remedy this problem. If you have a small kitchen you can drop a wall to expand the space. And if you have a big one, you can use it more utilitarian. If you have a large family, there can be a large demand from larger space.

Professional kitchen and bath technicians can look at the space you have available in your kitchen now and tell you how to make the most of it. By removing and relocating cabinets, knocking through partitions or walls, removing unnecessary closets, and moving appliances, your space can grow substantially so you have more space to make the most of. This is also the perfect time to figure out just how much storage space you need. With the right amount of storage, you’ll find that keeping your kitchen organized and tidy is much easier.

Ensures safety

All those loose screws in the drawer, the leaking faucet, the sharp or broken island edges etc. need to be replaced to avoid injury and loss of resource. Get them mended or upgraded.

McHale's KBA upgrade

No matter how much you love your home, it can happen that you look around one day and start to wonder whether your kitchen or bathroom appliances need an upgrade. After all, if the appliances were in the home when you bought it, there are likely to be newer, better options available.

The same goes if you did purchase yourself but it’s been more than seven years since that time. However, since replacing requires a considerable investment, it’s best to determine whether you’re simply looking for a different look or whether you really need to upgrade.

Do Your Kitchen Appliances Need Upgrading?

Here’s how you can tell if your stove, oven, dishwasher, and other kitchen appliances need upgrading:

  • They frequently need repairs. If you’re always having to schedule repairs, then the costs of those repairs are likely adding up. At some point, you need to figure out whether it’s better to use the money you’re paying in repairs to purchase replacements.
  • They aren’t energy-efficient. If your energy bill is relatively high each month, then upgrading your appliances can help you lower it. Especially if you purchase ENERGY STAR® appliances, you can be sure to enjoy the most energy-efficient new appliances.
  • The style of is outdated. Granted, an outdated style isn’t a reason for everyone to upgrade. However, if you have the money, then purchasing newer models with a more modern look can give your kitchen a more visually pleasing appeal.

Do Your Bathroom Appliances Need Upgrading?

Here’s how to tell if your bath, toilet, vanity, shower, or bidet need upgrading:

  • The enamel on is damaged. Although the enamel on bathroom furniture is quite hard, it can still get damaged. This leads to unsightly scratches and dents. These can be repaired, but it’s often better to replace the appliance.
  • The plumbing fixtures are worn and broken. Over time, plumbing fixtures can get damaged due to overuse, corrosion, or the buildup of sediment. When multiple plumbing fixtures are significantly damaged, it’s time to upgrade.
  • The appliances no longer meet your needs. If you have a regular bathroom but you’re getting older and losing mobility, you might need a different type of furniture. Walk-in bathtubs and higher toilets are better suited to the needs of seniors.
  • The style is outdated. If you’re forward-looking but your bathroom is so ‘90s, then upgrading your appliances can be a good idea to enhance your enjoyment of your home.

Maintaining Your Kitchen and Bathroom Drains

Maintaining Your Kitchen and Bathroom Drains

Kitchen Sink Drain

As a responsible homeowner, you probably know that it’s equally crucial to keep those parts of your home that you can’t see in just as good a shape as the parts that are visible. One of those important parts that you can’t see is your plumbing system. If you don’t properly maintain it, all sorts of issues can occur, ranging from leaking pipes and clogged sewer lines to sediment buildup and blocked drains. One of the most important things you can do to prevent some of these issues from occurring is to keep your kitchen and bath drains in good working order. Here’s what you need to know.

Keeping Your Kitchen Drain in Good Repair

If you’re like most households, you make heavy use of your kitchen drain. You use it to wash your hands, wash dishes, and do food preparation. You might even have a garbage disposal you use to get rid of organic cooking waste. However, this heavy use can easily clog up the drain over time.

To prevent this from happening, you should avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain. Instead, you can dispose of this by pouring it into a bottle and throwing it away. Also, don’t throw any food waste down the drain unless you run the garbage disposal, and never throw anything made of metal, glass, or plastic into the drain.

In addition, you should clean the drain around once every two weeks. You can do this with a simple, homemade drain cleaning solution. Boil a kettle of water and pour it into the drain. Then pour in half a cup of baking soda and let it work for about 5 minutes. Next, mix a cup of vinegar with a cup of hot water and pour it into the drain. Cover the drain with the plug, and wait for five to 10 minutes. Finally, flush the drain with another kettle of boiling water. To clean your garbage disposal, you can fill it with ice cubes, cover it, and run it for a couple of minutes. The friction from the ice cubes will remove any grease and sediment buildup. Then rinse the drain with boiling water.

How to Keep Your Bath Drain in Good Working Order

Your bath drain might not be as heavily used as your kitchen drain, but it can still get clogged, especially due to hair and soap. You can prevent this from happening by cleaning it once a week. If you have a bath drain with a stop, remove the stop and clean it. Then use the same method as above to clean out the drain itself. You can also use a commercial drain cleaner, but be sure to wear protective gloves and follow the instructions to the letter.

Of course, it’s always possible that despite your best efforts, you can experience a clogged drain or other issue. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, you’re best advised to call a licensed plumber as soon as possible. Remember: Paying a little bit of money for some repairs right now can save you a lot of hassle and expenses instead of waiting until the issue gets out of hand!

Benefits of Ceramic Tiles in Your Home

Benefits of Ceramic Tiles in Your Home

Ceramic Tile installation

You may be wondering why you should install ceramic tiles in your kitchen instead of hardwood floors. While both are great options – and we install both – ceramic tile flooring is a good option for many different reasons. Here are some of the ways a ceramic tile can benefit your home:

Ways that Ceramic Tile Can Benefit Your Home

  • It’s waterproof. Think about how steamy the bathroom can get when you take a shower, or how wet the floor gets when your kids get out of the tub. Consider all of the back-splash and spills that happen in the kitchen. In most places, this continuous exposure could cause costly water damage. Ceramic tiles don’t corrode overt time or rot like wood and other materials, so they are an investment that will benefit you long term.
  • Easy to clean. Because ceramic tile isn’t absorbent, debris lie on top of the surface. Dirt, stains, water, and other liquids will wipe away with ease so you can maintain a clean environment at all times.
  • Visually pleasing. Ceramic tiles can certainly add appeal to your kitchen or bathroom. Not only do they come in a wide variety of colors and designs, they tend to pop and add style to any area where they’re installed. If you’re looking to add appeal to your kitchen or bathroom, you should consider a ceramic tile installation.
  • Increased home value. Not only are ceramic tiles pleasant to look at, they’re can add value to your home.
  • Cost effectiveness. Because they are so durable, it’s a guarantee that they last longer than wood or other materials. Ceramic tiles are a wise investment – especially when you cake into consideration how long they will last you.
  • Installation and repair. For the professionals at McHale’s Kitchen and Bath, a tile installation is a simple process. Repairs are easy too! While they are considerably tough, it’s possible for them to chip or break. One of our skilled technicians will be able to replace the affected tile in no time at all.

3 Benefits of Tankless Water Heaters in Lowell

3 Benefits of Tankless Water Heaters in Lowell

  • Uncategorized

If you live around Lowell like we do, you probably rely heavily on your water heater in the colder months of the year. Whether it be for cooking, bathing or helping heat the house, hot water is essential to the lives of most people, unless of course they don’t enjoy cooked food, hot showers or warm homes.

When it comes to hot water, our professionals at Milltown Plumbing in Lowell recommend the tankless water heater. This system, which heats up the water instantaneously as it passes through the appliance, can offer savings down the road and is also less likely to leave you stranded with a cold shower on those negative degree January New England mornings.

Below are a few key features of tankless water heaters to consider before putting any more money into your traditional unit.

  1. Maintenance Costs: Traditional tank-based water heaters are built to last 10-15 years and can require multiple maintenance visits to keep them up and running. Tankless units, when properly installed, can last up to 20 years. This nearly doubles the lifespan of some traditional water tank units, and saves you money on both repairs and replacements down the road.
  1. Space: Traditional water heats can be monstrous. Having to hold gallons of water, they can take up an entire corner in a basement, or if you don’t have a basement, valuable closet space in your living area. Tankless water heaters, on the other hand, require almost no space.Since the unit holds no water save for the small amount in the heat exchanger coil to be heated, the appliances need little room to operate. Tankless water heats can be installed pretty much anywhere in the house, whether it be a smaller unit near a point of point-of-use (like a shower or sink) or a larger unit to act as a central heating source in a centralized location. Regardless of how you choose to install them, tankless water heaters can bring back your previously occupied basement and closet space.
  1. Energy Costs: This may be the biggest benefit of all. Although the prices of gas and oil are currently on a downswing, energy is still on everyone’s mind. When properly installed, tankless water heaters offer a host of energy saving perks. These include reduced water usage from not needing to run the faucet or shower to get hot water, to improved energy efficiency when running a device that only heats the water you need. These small price cuts can seem low at first, but over the 20 year lifespan of a tankless water heating unit, they can add up to some serious savings.

If a tankless water heater sounds like the answer to your hot water needs, call Milltown Plumbing in Lowell today to have your hot water ready in an instant. Never fear cold water again!
